Senior Prom Themes: Was The Polled Opinion Really The Reality?

Seniors, Staff, and more disagree with the major decision. Is there time for change?

A major time for seniors in high school is prom, and many are involved in the planning process. One quintessential part of the process is choosing a prom theme, and for some reason, we reuse the same themes over and over again, although we lack the decorations at prom.

It’s such an important night that many seniors have been looking forward to since the start of their high school career. It’s a night to celebrate with your peers and the theme can determine the whole mood of the night.

Our given options were Enchanted Forest, Met Gala, and Aladdin and overall we feel these options don’t represent our class, and either aren’t a theme or are too overused. Recently, our senior class officers used a series of polls with these above themes due to the fact that they wanted “to do something that had been done recently …[and] mainly wanted the students’ opinion [on the theme].” The result concluded with the Met Gala as the Senior prom theme, but even with this being a vote, many Seniors didn’t feel in touch with this.

To get an idea of how other Seniors felt about this decision, we interviewed fellow Seniors. When presented with the chosen theme, Met Gala, Ava Massucco states “Met Gala is a weird theme because the Met Gala has its own theme every year, so what would our prom theme even be? Also, I feel like the red carpet could be very tacky. Honestly though, I’ll deal with it and make the most out of it! ”

Roman Surena-Mattson, another Senior, thought that the theme was “Middddd.” Similarly, Bazan said, “Met Gala is not a good theme.” It seems we have a clear bias against this theme, meaning we should change it.

On a positive note, Joe DiChiaro states, “At least it’s not Aladdin.” We are certainly glad we eliminated some of the other worse options.

Talking with some McMahon staff, we found interesting opinions. One of our security guards, Chris, thinks that the “enchanted forest [theme] would be cool [because] I could be the big bad wolf.” Another teacher, Mr. Colorassi, argued that “The problem with Met Gala is that the outfits are designed to attract attention… I don’t know that I’d want a Met Gala theme because of the fear of someone showing up in a meat dress like Lady Gaga.”

Overall, it didn’t seem like many liked the Met Gala theme, but would prefer other options like the Enchanted Forest or something better. There are lots of good themes out there that we haven’t used and there would be great theme ideas, such as Gatsby, A Night at the Museum, Brazil Carnival, and Mardi Gras.

We are highly anticipating prom, but there are always ways to improve, and changing the theme from the chosen theme of Met Gala to a new and unused theme would be more representative of our class and definitely increase ticket sales and prom turnout, which would be beneficial to all of us as a senior class as we enjoy one last school event as a class before graduation.
