The Journey Towards an Unforgettable Season!

The+Journey+Towards+an+Unforgettable+Season%21

With the end of the fall sports, comes the end of the 2023 soccer season. This season the Varsity team has left it all on the field proudly repping McMahon as we have seen incredible skill, determination, and teamwork. From thrilling wins to standout performances, this season was one to remember! Ranking 4th in Fairfield County Soccer Standings the boys varsity soccer team proved to be a force to be reckoned with but this didn’t happen overnight.

This team has been years in the making as they’ve grown as individuals and as a family. While being asked what made McMahon’s teams different from others in the state Juan Pablo “JP” Gonzalez a left back and Maycol Mejia a team captain and right midfielder both seniors here at McMahon described the team as “a brotherhood” and “a tight-knit family.”

JP explained that they knew they needed to communicate more as a team after the loss against Westhill High School by a score of 0-1. “Westhill was a very significant loss, the day after we gathered to talk as a team and gathered all our ideas but most importantly we talked as a family which is something we like to embrace with our “1..2..3..Family.” We chant at every match.”

After that they had a winning streak of six consecutive games and their bond as not only a team but as a family only grew to be stronger and more powerful.

On Wednesday, Oct 4, 2023, one of the most memorable games of the season not only for those playing but those on the stands was held on the Casagrande Field… The McMahon Varsity Boys Soccer team won their game against Norwalk High School by a score of 4-2.

“Norwalk High was definitely the game to win. We made history! The atmosphere during that game was just out of this world. I mean we beat Norwalk High after 16 years of not being able to do so, and for us seniors that game against our all-time rivals was definitely one for the books and I was able to work through the pain and score a goal,” said Maycol Mejia while trying to put the excitement of the game into words.

This team definitely faced challenges to accomplish what they did this season. Through their injuries and tough competitors, they all pushed through for their team and for each other.

“This year we went through a lot of challenges. I mean we had a handful of team injuries and one of our captains Juan Villa was injured so we really fought for him on that turf during States and CIACs,” explained JP and Maycol as they reflected on his senior season.

The second round of CIACs was the last game this 2023 team played as the Varsity Boys team lost their game against Hall High School by a score of 1-2. Despite the final score, McMahon showcased unwavering determination and resilience on the soccer field. They fought until the very last whistle, leaving everything on the pitch. The team’s passion and never-give-up attitude were evident throughout the game. Although the result may not have been what they hoped for, their performance was a testament to their hard work and dedication.

The team can hold their heads high knowing they gave it their all and left an impact on future and returning players. This season raised the bar for our soccer program! So here’s to the bright future of McMahon Soccer!
