This year there’s a new team at McMahon–well, kind of new, and kind of at McMahon. The former NORMAC boys hockey team is now merging with Staples to create STORMAC. This triple threat will feature players from Staples, Norwalk, and McMahon. Hosted at the Milford Ice Pavilion, this team will be ready to take on the competition.
I got the chance to discuss the merge, and other facts about the team with the new head coach, Matthew Bohn.
How do you think the transition will affect players coming in?
Even though NORMAC has been a good rivalry for Staples in the past, a lot of Norwalk and Westport kids know each other and grow up playing together. We lifted weights and conditioned as a group over the summer, walked together for Alzheimer’s this fall, and have had meetings to start getting everyone on the same page. The coaches met with the captains in the offseason several times to talk about leadership skills and how we should be bringing everyone along together in this new journey. They’ve been really receptive. The coaches are looking forward to seeing them set the example and do things the right way. It’s early in the season, but the vibes have been good and the boys are working hard and together.
Speaking of Leadership, who are your captains?
Thatcher Cullen, McMahon senior
Harry Goodburn, Staples senior
Cooper Paul, Staples senior
Mac Lawton, McMahon junior
Austin Minoff, Norwalk junior
Where will the practices/games be located?
The Milford Ice Pavilion
What are some of your goals for the season?
We’re looking to learn and get a little better every day. The main goals for the team are to come together as one unit and to compete every day we’re on the ice. We have a great group of kids and are excited to have the opportunity to be on the ice this year.
What are your hopes for STORMAC’S Inaugural Season?
Anytime there’s a new venture like this, it’s hard to predict how you’re going to do in terms of wins and losses. I can tell you that we are going to work hard and compete. I am very excited about our group of kids, who will grow and get better as the season moves forward. At the end of the day, we all love hockey. That we get the opportunity to be out there every day and compete for our high schools is a beautiful thing.
