A lot of students and parents have been complaining about the school not letting anyone in until 7:10 AM. As the weather is getting colder, people are becoming frustrated that they have to wait outside for the doors to open — especially since a lot of students get dropped off early.
The staff are saying that this rule is important because when students are inside school too early, they tend to have too much free time and sometimes get into mischief. However, students argue that this is ridiculous because it’s starting to get very cold and they do not want to wait outside for doors to open.
I spoke to a parent about this and they said “I think it’s stupid to have a bunch of kids outside in the freezing cold. If my kid gets sick, then what’s gonna happen then?” Many other parents seem to agree.
I personally think that having students wait outside is not a good idea at all — especially as it’s starting to get progressively colder. A lot of students come early and end up having to wait outside for 10-15 minutes. I don’t understand why staff thinks the kids have too much free time, because they don’t get that much time till they have to go straight to class because they have to go straight to class anyway.
If staff don’t trust the students with all this free time, a solution to this could be to open the supervised areas like the cafeteria, gym, or library a bit earlier. I think staff should seriously consider opening the doors earlier. It’s only a matter of time before the weather continues to get worse and students start getting sick. Keeping the kids outside isn’t just inconvenient, it’s unsafe.
