Liam Luyanda is a senior here at Brien McMahon. He is on the indoor and outdoor track team, but outside of track and school, he boxes. Liam has been boxing for one year and he boxes for Hammer Boxing Club. This club is coached by one of our own security guards, Chris Gonzalez.
I decided to write about Liam because I have known him since seventh grade. We have a close friendship yet I don’t know much about him, so I decided to share what I learn in an article.
To learn more about Liam I asked him a few questions. I asked, “How did you get into boxing?”
Liam answered, “I got into boxing because the security guard is a coach, and my brother Logan was also boxing.” Logan is also a student at Brien McMahon, he is a junior.
Does boxing affect you in any way mentally? “It’s like a way to get any negative emotions out by punching a bag.”
Is there anyone that motivates you while boxing? “My coach, my parents, and all of my teammates give me motivation while boxing.”
Liam moved to Norwalk in fourth grade and went to Wolfpit Elementary School. For high school, Liam transferred to McMahon his sophomore year from Green Farms Academy, located in Westport. He initially went to GFA for basketball purposes, but decided to transfer because he didn’t like the school environment.
“I enjoy McMahon’s environment and I feel happier here. I don’t play basketball anymore though because I wasn’t taking it seriously anymore, but I still play pickup games with my friends and family.”
For outdoor track, Liam runs the 100 meter, 200 meter, and he also high jumps. For indoor track, Liam ran the 55 meter, the 300 meter, and long jumped. “I mainly run track just to stay in shape for boxing. I like outdoor track better than indoor because the vibes feel better, and the air is more breathable.”
Words used by people I’ve asked to describe Liam were, tall, goofus. sweet, and empathetic. Words I personally choose are funny, helpful, loyal, and genuine.
After a lot of training all year, Liam finally has his first boxing match of the year on May 23rd in Stamford at Boys & Girls Club of Stamford. We hope to see Liam succeed in this fight and progress further on with his boxing career.
