With the start of the new school year there have been many changes. Those changes come with many controversial ones like the tighter control over tardies, absences, and hallways.
Mr.Dustin explains, “This new policy will make sure students get to class, make sure they have the ability to learn. All students are expected to get into class within the 5-minute passing period and the 5-minute gracing period.” He also said that “students that are caught in the hallway after the 10-minute period will have to go down to the main office and get a yellow pass from the office and from that point you will receive a 30-minute detention.”
The consequences can go from a 30-minute detention to 1 1-day In School Suspension (ISS). There are some mixed feelings about these new policies so we interviewed some students and teachers. Juan Garcias, a 10th grader expressed “This policy is so weird, I understand where teachers are coming from, but they didn’t take into consideration students’ transportation or just the hall traffic being crazy sometimes. Even walking across the school takes time.”
While speaking with different students we came across sophomore Maria Valencia and she said, “I come late to school every day but I wake up at 6:00. It’s not my fault. I don’t drive myself. The traffic in the morning is unbearable, especially with all the buses. I shouldn’t be punished for stuff that is out of my control.”
‘This might seem tough right now but this you will use for the rest of your life. I always tell my kids it’s always better to be 5 minutes early than 5 minutes late.” We also spoke to faculty about the matter and Chemistry teacher Dr. Rich said this in response to being asked how this policy affects students. As students, we don’t see it now but these regulations just may be in our favor in the future. We have to look at these new rules in a better light and keep working on bettering ourselves as Senators.
