Senior Senators, welcome back! First, let me just say congratulations to all of you for your hard work the past three years. Every essay written, every energy drink consumed, and every late night study session conquered have brought you one step closer to crossing that stage in June. Your year is finally here, and as exciting as all of these ‘lasts’ are, they can also be daunting. Very few people are fortunate enough to know exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives at seventeen. Most of us are asking ourselves; what do I want to be? Who do I want to be?
Unfortunately, I can’t answer that question for you, but I can provide you with the tools to discover the answer yourself. Brien McMahon has tons of resources to help students plan their futures, no matter which direction their dreams are taking them.
First, take advantage of your guidance counselor! Many of us are lucky enough to have counselors who have been with us since our freshman year, helping us with our classes, grades, and extracurriculars. You don’t need to have a desired occupation or even a clear passion in mind to meet with your guidance counselor. You can just think out loud with them, brainstorming careers or pathways that align with your interests. Furthermore, your guidance counselors can put you in touch with other people who may have more information about the future you’d like to build. They can write you recommendation letters for colleges and trade schools, put you in touch with workforce organizations, or even just provide you with additional information. Don’t underestimate the value of saying your ideas out loud, it can be extremely clarifying! You can find your guidance counselor on their google classroom page, where they’ll have a link posted to book an appointment with them.
Second, meet with Brien McMahon’s new college and career counselor, Ms. Forbes! Ms. Forbes can help you research colleges you may be interested in, fill out applications, and find majors you’re interested in. She can also help you discover career opportunities that are right for you. To make an appointment with her, visit the ‘Senior Success Center’ google classroom page!
Lastly, for those who plan on attending college, Brien McMahon offers a variety of college visits! During these visits, an admission representative from each college or university will visit McMahon, either in person or virtually. This representative will tell you about the school, the admissions process, and answer any questions you may have. Since these visits are located in our College and Career Center, they are typically limited to fifteen people, so make sure you sign up quickly! You can sign up through Naviance by visiting the ‘College Visits’ tab.
No matter where your path leads, Brien McMahon’s resources are here to help! Good luck Senior Senators, we can’t wait to see what your future holds!
