At McMahon much like the students, not all teachers are the same nor are their teaching styles. Some teachers can be very strict, while others are more chill and understanding. Much like their teaching style, their classroom can say a lot about a teacher.
The student’s favorite teacher can be based on what they would like to do in the future. Most student athletes’ favorite teachers are their coaches, while the kids who do music might favor the music teacher. Or a student’s favorite teacher is someone whom they feel the most comfortable with; or someone they feel like they can speak freely to. Every student at McMahon should have a teacher they feel very comfortable with and can express themselves to.
When asking students from every grade their answers were very similar to why their favorite teacher is their favorite. The common characteristics that made a teacher their favorite were being kind and understanding.
“I think something that makes a good teacher is somebody who can make a good connection with students. Being able to understand a student is important and helps them feel heard. I’ve had teachers in the past who don’t believe me when I tell them I can’t do certain things or teachers who contradict themselves which can make me or other students feel unimportant,” Sebastian Galdamez a Senior at McMahon.
The classroom that a teacher teaches in can also influence the feelings that students have.
“I just love the vibe she has in class. I feel very welcome, It is a very homey setting class,” Christelle Edward a Junior at McMahon.
When students feel welcome in the classroom and feel safe, it can allow students to feel comfortable around the teacher. They will feel free to express themselves.
“ I like that she is very nice, she’s very sweet, she’s very hardworking, and she’s patient with the class. She gives us time to do make-up work,” Chris Laverde a Sophomore at McMahon.
Everyone’s life gets busy but when a teacher is understanding and allows students to do make-up work it can make life a bit less stressful for students.
Students at McMahon’s favorite teachers are the ones who understand when life gets stressful and are very kind-hearted.
