The recent closure of the student lounge during blocks 3 and 4 at Brien McMahon High School has left many students confused, especially those who rely on it during open-end periods. The lounge was shut down because of noise complaints and overcrowding, but not everyone agrees with the decision.
School staff said the noise was disrupting nearby classrooms.
Security officers Chris and Mike said the space had too many students in it. “The lounge wasn’t made for that many kids,” Chris said. “It got loud, messy, and unsafe.”
While some students understand the issue, others say closing the lounge isn’t the right solution.
“Yeah, kids were being loud, but is that a good reason to close it for good?” said senior Josue Urena. “Some of us can’t go home during open-end. My parents work, and I don’t have a ride.”
Students now have to find other places to go during their free time. Staying in a teacher’s class is one option, but most of the time it’s not ideal. “ The lounge was quieter and more comfortable,” said junior Alinson Morales.
Another option is the library, but it’s often closed for classes or testing. “The library isn’t reliable,” said Kaylie Colonello. “Half the time, it’s not even open.”
Many believe there are better ways to handle the problem. For instance, enforcing rules or assigning supervision could prevent future issues without shutting down the lounge entirely. Closing it affects everyone, including those who followed the rules.
Many students feel like they’re being punished for something they didn’t do and just want a place to be during open end. With the lounge closed, they’re left without a reliable space to go.
The problem continues, and many are hoping for a solution soon.
